It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) while he had a gold ring in his hand. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) turned his face away from him. When that person saw the Prophet’s displeasure, he left and had the gold ring removed and made a ring of iron, which he wore and then came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “This is even worse than that. This is the adornment of the people of Hell.” He went away and threw it away and wore a silver ring. Upon this, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) remained silent.

Hadith Takhrij«حسن : مسند أحمد ، حديث : 163/2»
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues: ➊ From this hadith, it is understood that gold and iron jewelry is forbidden (haram) for men. The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) considered an iron ring to be worse than gold, which is evidence of its prohibition.
➋ Some scholars consider an iron ring to be permissible (ja'iz), and as evidence they present the narration from Bukhari and Muslim in which the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said to a companion: "Seek [something], even if it is an iron ring." He said this when the companion could not find anything to give as a bridal gift (mahr) to his wife. Hafiz Ibn Hajar (rahimahullah) has written that deducing the permissibility of an iron ring from this is questionable, because the intent could have been its value—that is, to sell it and use its price. (Fath al-Bari: 10/266) Shaykh al-Albani (rahimahullah) states that it is also possible to reconcile [the narrations] by saying that this incident occurred before the prohibition. (Sharh Sahih al-Adab al-Mufrad)
➌ From this, it is understood that wearing a silver ring is permissible, and specifying any particular weight for it is not established from any hadith.
