It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would gather together, then a tree would come before them and some people would go to its right and some to its left, then when they met again, they would greet each other with salam.

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
It is not necessary for a person to come from afar in order to say salam; rather, even when moving from one room to another, one should say salam. If people separate from each other and then gather again, even if only a few moments later, they should still say salam.
