It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: "Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, divided mercy into one hundred parts. He kept ninety-nine parts with Himself and sent down one part to the earth. It is from this one part that the creation shows mercy to one another, so much so that a mare lifts its hoof away from its young lest it should harm it."

Benefits and Issues:
➊ Allah’s mercy is a creation of Allah Ta’ala, whose components are possible. The mutual connection among humans and the enjoyment animals derive from one another are both results of this mercy. In fact, this entire universe is running as a consequence of Allah Ta’ala’s mercy. It should be kept in mind that the compassion humans and other creatures show to one another is the result of that mercy which Allah has placed in their hearts. Thus, this mercy is a creation of Allah. There is another mercy which is Allah Ta’ala’s inherent attribute (sifat dhati) and active attribute (sifat fi’li). Clearly, this is not created, but rather one of Allah Ta’ala’s attributes. Allah Ta’ala says:

“And if Allah were to take people to task for what they have earned, He would not leave on the earth a single moving creature...”

➋ The one who does not show mercy to humans is even worse than animals, because even they show mercy, and it is due to this mercy that their progeny increases; otherwise, wild beasts would devour their own offspring.
➌ Some people, by narrating traditions regarding Allah’s mercy, say that Allah is Most Forgiving and Merciful, so even if righteous deeds are not performed, He will forgive. This is not correct, because only His obedient servants are deserving of Allah’s mercy. Allah Ta’ala says:

“And My mercy encompasses all things, so I will decree it for those who have taqwa (God-consciousness).”

In reality, Satan beautifies the path of evil deeds and presents it before people, and man, being misled, says: “If Allah does not forgive us, then whom will He forgive?” Many preachers create such negligence in people, whereas wherever Allah Ta’ala has mentioned His mercy, He has also openly declared the severity of His punishment. Therefore, the correct creed is that a person should perform righteous deeds, avoid sins, and then hope for Allah’s mercy. One should not rely solely on one’s deeds.
