Hadith 970

Narrated Abdullah ibn Masud: Alqamah said that Abdullah ibn Masud caught hold of his hand saying that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ caught hold of his (Ibn Masud's) hand and taught him the tashahhud during prayer. He then narrated the (well known ) tradition (of tashahhud). This version adds: When you say this or finish this, then you have completed your prayer. If you want to stand up, then stand, and if you want to remain sitting, then remain sitting.

Explanation & Benefits

970. Commentary:
This portion of the narration, «واذ قلت» "When you say this" until the end, is actually the statement of Abdullah ibn Mas'ud radi Allahu anhu himself and is inserted (mudraj) into the hadith. See: [عون المبعود]
And the truth is that reciting the tashahhud is obligatory (wajib).
➋ Such subtleties are found in the transmission of hadith, where the narrator, in relating the hadith, would also adopt the outward manner of his teacher. For example, in this narration, it is mentioned that the hadith was narrated while holding the hand, and this has been considered a type of "musalsal" (continuous chain with a repeated action).
