Hadith 88

حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ يُونُسَ ، حَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ عُرْوَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْأَرْقَمِ ، أَنَّهُ خَرَجَ حَاجًّا أَوْ مُعْتَمِرًا وَمَعَهُ النَّاسُ وَهُوَ يَؤُمُّهُمْ ، فَلَمَّا كَانَ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ أَقَامَ الصَّلَاةَ صَلَاةَ الصُّبْحِ ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : لِيَتَقَدَّمْ أَحَدُكُمْ وَذَهَبَ إِلَى الْخَلَاءِ ، فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ : " إِذَا أَرَادَ أَحَدُكُمْ أَنْ يَذْهَبَ الْخَلَاءَ وَقَامَتِ الصَّلَاةُ ، فَلْيَبْدَأْ بِالْخَلَاءِ " ، قَالَ أَبُو دَاوُد : رَوَى وُهَيْبُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ ، وَشُعَيْبُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ ، وَأَبُو ضَمْرَةَ هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ ، عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ رَجُلٍ حَدَّثَهُ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَرْقَمَ ، وَالْأَكْثَرُ الَّذِينَ رَوَوْهُ عَنْ هِشَامٍ ، قَالُوا كَمَا قَالَ زُهَيْرٌ .
Narrated Abdullah ibn al-Arqam: Urwah reported on the authority of his father that Abdullah ibn al-Arqam travelled for performing hajj (pilgrimage) or Umrah. He was accompanied by the people whom he led in prayer. One day when he was leading them in the dawn (fajr) prayer, he said to them: One of you should come forward. He then went away to relieve himself. He said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: When any of you feels the need of relieving himself while the congregational prayer is ready, he should go to relieve himself.

Explanation & Benefits

Benefits and Issues:
➊ Humility and submissiveness (khushu‘ wa khudu‘) are extremely fundamental matters for the acceptance of prayer (salah). One should exert full effort and strive for this, and avoid every condition that could cause disturbance in it. Therefore, if one feels the need to go to the toilet (bayt al-khala’), one should first relieve oneself.
➋ Similarly, regarding the issue of food: when food is ready and one is hungry, one should eat first, as is mentioned in the following hadith.
➌ During long journeys, the Sunnah is to maintain collectivity. One person should be appointed as the leader (amir) of the journey, as has been mentioned above regarding Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Arqam radi Allahu anhu.

853. Commentary:

➊ On that day, he himself did not come; instead, he sent a man in his place who led the prayer. After the prayer, he arrived and offered his apology.

➋ If one feels the need to relieve oneself, one should do so before the prayer, even if the congregation (jama‘ah) is missed, because in the state of not having relieved oneself, one’s attention will keep diverting during the prayer, the mind will remain distracted, and there will be discomfort in the stomach. After relieving oneself, the prayer will be performed with tranquility. As for the reward of the congregation, then insha’Allah, a person who is regular in attending the congregation will receive it in the case of a valid excuse, as is the established legal principle (asl) in the Shari‘ah. And Allah knows best.

The wisdom behind this is that if one begins the prayer in such a state, he will not be able to direct his attention towards the prayer, nor will he be able to perform the prayer with tranquility. Therefore, it is necessary to relieve oneself of this need before commencing the prayer, so that one may pray with attention and tranquility.

Benefit:
In this hadith, one of the important etiquettes of prayer is mentioned: if there is a need to relieve oneself, one should first take care of that, and then perform the prayer, even if it means praying without the congregation. Because if a person prays while needing to relieve himself, there will be no humility and concentration (khushu' and khudu') in the prayer. From this, it is also established that any action which distracts attention during prayer should not be done.
