864. Commentary:
➊ This narration is authentic according to Shaykh al-Albani rahimahullah. Hadith [866] supports it.
➋ Reckoning of deeds on the Day of Resurrection is a reality.
➌ After the two testimonies (shahadatayn), prayer (salah) is the most important pillar of the religion, and among the rights of Allah, it is the first for which reckoning will be done. [سنن نسائي حديث۔ 466]
Whereas among the rights of the servants, the first reckoning will be for bloodshed. [صحيح بخاري۔ حديث6533 وصحيح مسلم حديث 1678]
➍ One should be very cautious of any negligence in fulfilling the obligatory duties (fara'id). Likewise, one should pay great attention to the supererogatory acts (nawafil), because it is through these that deficiencies in the obligatory acts will be compensated.
➎ The supererogatory prayers, especially the emphasized regular Sunnahs (sunan rawatib mu’akkadah), are a continuous Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. Except during travel, he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam never abandoned them; rather, on some occasions, if they were missed, he would make them up (qada) later. Some of the righteous have said that regularity in the Sunnahs and supererogatory acts serves as a motivation for regularity in the obligatory acts, and whoever is negligent in the Sunnahs may very well become negligent in the obligatory acts as well.
➏ As for those hadiths in which the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam gave glad tidings of Paradise to some newly converted Bedouins on the condition of adhering only to the obligatory acts, firstly, this pertains to the early period of Islam. As these people gradually understood the truth, they advanced greatly in performing supererogatory acts, as their biographies make clear. Secondly, due to the blessed company of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, they attained such purification that their obligatory acts reached such a high level that even if they did not perform the supererogatory acts, the guarantee and glad tidings of success were issued from the tongue of the Messenger. Therefore, it is not correct for other Muslims to compare themselves to them in this matter, nor is it proper to rely solely on the obligatory acts. Rather, keeping in mind the Day of Regret (Yawm al-Hasrah), one should strive ever more for nearness to Allah. «وبالله التوفيق»
Yes, if sometimes the Sunnahs are missed due to an excuse, it is not obligatory to make them up.
