Hadith 834

The above-mention tradition has also been transmitted through a different chain of narrators by Humaid, but he did not mention the word “Supererogatory prayer” This version has: Al-Hasan (al-Basri) would recite fatihat al-kitab in the noon and afternoon prayers while he led in prayer or he was behind the imam and would glorify Allah, and would repeatedly say: “Allah is most great” and “ There is no god but Allah” (i. e takbir and tahlil) equal to the amount one recites al-Qaf (Surah 50) and al-Dhariyat (surah 51).

834. Commentary:
The first hadith is disconnected (munqati‘), and the second is the practice of Hasan al-Basri rahimahullah. True goodness and salvation lie only in those actions that are established from the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, and it is certainly established to this extent that the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, during recitation, would supplicate at verses of mercy and seek refuge and forgiveness at verses of punishment. Similarly, in the qunut, between the prostrations (sujud), in bowing (ruku‘), and after the tashahhud in prostrations and bowing, supplications appropriate to the situation have been transmitted and may be made.
