Hadith 805

حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ ، عَنْ سِمَاكِ بْنِ حَرْبٍ ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ سَمُرَةَ ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " كَانَ يَقْرَأُ فِي الظُّهْرِ وَالْعَصْرِ بِ وَالسَّمَاءِ وَالطَّارِقِ ، وَالسَّمَاءِ ذَاتِ الْبُرُوجِ وَنَحْوِهِمَا مِنَ السُّوَرِ " .
Narrated Jabir ibn Samurah: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to recite in the noon and afternoon prayer: "By the Heaven and the Morning Star" (Surah 86) and "By the Heaven, holding mansions of the stars" (Surah 85) and similar surahs of equal length.

981. Commentary: Regarding the recitation (qira’ah) in Dhuhr and ‘Asr, various ahadith have been narrated. There is no contradiction among them; rather, the meaning of all these narrations is that the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would recite with a moderate recitation in Dhuhr and ‘Asr, that is, neither very long nor very short. And in the Fajr prayer, he would recite at length. And Allah knows best.
