Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas: The Prophet ﷺ said: Do not pray behind a sleeping or a talking person.
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Umar Farooq Saeedi
694. Commentary:
It is established from authentic ahadith that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would perform prayer and (at times) Aisha (radi Allahu anha) would be lying asleep in front of him. See: [صحيح بخار ي، حديث : 382 وصحيح مسلم، حديث : 512]
It is thus understood that this is permissible. However, in places where people are engaged in conversation and are facing the qiblah, it is apparent that this could cause distraction to the one praying and disturb his humility (khushu‘). Therefore, in such situations, it is better to exercise caution as well.
