Abu Saeed Al-Khudri said; The Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw a tendency among his companions to go to the back. He said to them; come forward and follow my lead, and let those who come after you follow your lead people will continue to keep to the back till Allah would put them at the back.
Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
796. Commentary:
The first row should follow the imam by seeing and hearing him. The second row should follow the first row by seeing them. In this way, it continues until the last row. This is the best form of discipline and order. If one follows (the imam) only by hearing the voice, then often it happens that someone may precede the imam, and disorder is displayed as well. Therefore, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) instructed those who are intelligent to stand close to him so that the following of the imam may be correct.
The second meaning of this sentence could also be that you should acquire training from me properly, so that those who come later (the Tabi‘in) may follow you.

Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues:
فَأْتَمُّوا بِي:
Follow me and emulate me. The people in the first row will follow the actions of the imam, and those in the second row will learn the imam’s actions by observing the actions of those in the first row.
Therefore, each subsequent row will follow the row in front of it. Another meaning could be that those who come after the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum ajma'in) will learn the way, conduct, and behavior of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) from the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum ajma'in), thus establishing a practical continuity.

Benefits and Issues:
➊
If there is space available in the front row, one should move forward and stand there.
It is not correct to remain standing in the back row with the thought that someone else will come and complete the front row.
However, if there is a person present who is superior in knowledge or age, he should be given the opportunity to move forward.
➋
The worshippers in the first row perform bowing (ruku) and prostration (sujud) by watching the imam.
Those in the subsequent rows perform bowing and prostration by watching the worshippers in the row ahead of them,
even if the imam’s voice is not clearly audible.
This too is considered following (iqtida) the imam.
➌
Negligence in good deeds becomes a cause of deprivation in the Hereafter.
➍
“Allah lets them remain behind.”
This could mean that they remain behind in terms of knowledge and virtue in this world.
And it could also mean that in the Hereafter, they will be deprived of the highest ranks of Paradise,
or they will lag behind others in being released from Hell.
➎
When inviting towards good, mentioning the worldly and hereafterly benefits,
and clarifying the worldly and hereafterly harms in case of negligence,
is a beneficial method of training.
