حَدَّثَنَا عِيسَى بْنُ شَاذَانَ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَيَّاشٌ الرَّقَّامُ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْأَعْلَى ، حَدَّثَنَا قُرَّةُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا بُدَيْلٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا شَهْرُ بْنُ حَوْشَبٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ غَنْمٍ ، قَالَ : قَالَ أَبُو مَالِكٍ الْأَشْعَرِيُّ : أَلَا أُحَدِّثُكُمْ بِصَلَاةِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ؟ قَالَ : " فَأَقَامَ الصَّلَاةَ وَصَفَّ الرِّجَالَ وَصَفَّ خَلْفَهُمُ الْغِلْمَانَ ثُمَّ صَلَّى بِهِمْ ، فَذَكَرَ صَلَاتَهُ ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : هَكَذَا صَلَاةُ " ، قَالَ عَبْدُ الْأَعْلَى : لَا أَحْسَبُهُ إِلَّا قَالَ : صَلَاةُ أُمَّتِي .
Narrated Abu Malik al-Ashari: Should I not tell you how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ led the prayer? He said: He had the iqamah announced, drew the men up in line and drew up the youths behind them, then led them in prayer. He then mentioned how he conducted it. and said: Thus is the prayer of. . . . . . AbdulA'la said: I think he must have said: My people.

677. Commentary:
The truth is that in congregation, those possessing knowledge and adults should stand close to the imam and in the first row. After them comes the place of children, but there is no strong evidence for their row being separate. If there are few worshippers, children may also stand in the first row, as is established from the hadith of Ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhuma. He narrates: "I entered the row and no one objected to me." [صحيح بخاري، حديث : 493 وصحيح مسلم، حديث : 504]
And at that time, he was near the age of puberty.
