Narrated Abdullah ibn Umar: The Prophet ﷺ said: Set the rows in order, stand shoulder to shoulder, close the gaps, be pliant in the hands of your brethren, and do not leave openings for the devil. If anyone joins up a row, Allah will join him up, but if anyone breaks a row, Allah will cut him off. Abu Dawud said: The name of Abu Shjrah is Kathir bin Murrah.

666. Commentary:
➊ "Whoever joined the row." That is, whoever was present in the prayer row, stood together with his Muslim brothers, did not create any gap or crookedness in it, for him there is the supplication of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam that Allah joins him with His special mercy. And whoever cut the row, meaning acted contrary to the aforementioned matters, then may Allah deprive him of His mercy.
➋ "Being gentle with brothers." This means that one should cooperate cheerfully with companions who are arranging the rows. In matters of moving forward or backward, one should accept what they say and not become upset. It also means that if there is space in the row, one should make room for another companion; but note that if there is no space, trying to squeeze in would trouble the brothers already standing, which is in no way permissible.
➌ Before the opening takbir (takbir tahrimah), the imam should, as needed, advise with these words and also practically ensure the rows are straightened.
