Narrated Abu Saeed al-Khudri: While the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was leading his Companions in prayer, he took off his sandals and laid them on his left side; so when the people saw this, they removed their sandals. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished his prayer, he asked: What made you remove your sandals? The replied: We saw you remove your sandals, so we removed our sandals. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said: Gabriel came to me and informed me that there was filth in them. When any of you comes to the mosque, he should see; if he finds filth on his sandals, he should wipe it off and pray in them.

Shaykh Umar Farooq Saeedi
650. Commentary:
➊ Praying while wearing shoes or after removing them—both are permissible. If one is wearing shoes, it is a condition that they be pure, and to purify them, merely rubbing them on dry ground is sufficient.
➋ If the worshipper is praying alone and wishes to place his shoes beside him, he should place them on his left side. However, if he is in a row (saff), he should place them between his feet.
➌ Prayer is not valid if performed in shoes or clothing contaminated with impurity (najasah). If it is possible to remove the impurity during the prayer, he should do so; otherwise, he should leave the prayer and remove the impurity.
➍ If, out of ignorance, one has already performed prayer in impure clothing or shoes, that prayer is valid and does not need to be repeated.
➎ Praying in shoes, in light of all the ahadith, is a correct practice; it has no relation to any increase or decrease in reward.
➏ The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was informed of matters of the unseen through Jibril Amin (Gabriel, alayhis salam).
➐ Following the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is as necessary in acts of worship as it is in his statements. The particular distinction and virtue of the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) was that they never hesitated in following the statements and actions of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), and every Muslim should be the same.

Question:
Is it correct to perform prayer (salah) while wearing shoes, and is it obligatory?
Answer:
If the shoes are pure and clean, and there is no impurity stuck to their soles, then performing prayer in them is permissible.
The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said:
“If one of you comes to the mosque, let him look; if he sees any filth or impurity on his shoes, let him wipe it off and pray in them.” [أبوداؤد، كتاب الصلوة : باب الصلاة فى النعل 650]
Sayyiduna Shaddad bin Aws radi Allahu anhu narrated that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said:
“Oppose the Jews, for they do not pray in their shoes or their leather socks (khuff).” [أبوداؤد، كتاب الصلوة : باب الصلاة فى النعل 652]
This command is not for obligation, because in the hadith of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar radi Allahu anhuma, it is mentioned that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would pray both barefoot and in shoes. [أبوداؤد، كتاب الصلوة : باب الصلاة فى النعل 653]
