حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدٍ ، أَنَّ عَائِشَةَ نَزَلَتْ عَلَى صَفِيَّةَ أُمِّ طَلْحَةَ الطَّلَحَاتِ فَرَأَتْ بَنَاتٍ لَهَا ، فَقَالَتْ : إِنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ دَخَلَ وَفِي حُجْرَتِي جَارِيَةٌ فَأَلْقَى لِي حَقْوَهُ ، وَقَالَ لِي : " شُقِّيهِ بِشُقَّتَيْنِ ، فَأَعْطِي هَذِهِ نِصْفًا وَالْفَتَاةَ الَّتِي عِنْدَ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ نِصْفًا ، فَإِنِّي لَا أَرَاهَا إِلَّا قَدْ حَاضَتْ ، أَوْ لَا أُرَاهُمَا إِلَّا قَدْ حَاضَتَا " ، قَالَ أَبُو دَاوُد : وَكَذَلِكَ رَوَاهُ هِشَامٌ ، عَنْ ابْنِ سِيرِينَ .
Muhammad said: Aishah came to Sufiyyah Umm Talhat al-Talhat and seeing her daughter she said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered (into the house) and there was a girl in my apartment. He gave his lower garment (wrapper) to me and said; tear it into two pieces and give one-half to this (girl) and the other half to the girl with Umm Salamah. I think she has reached puberty, or (he said) I think have reached puberty. Abu Dawud said: Hisham has narrated it similarly from Muhammad bin sirin.

642. Commentary:
This narration is weak in its chain of transmission; however, the emphasis on veiling (purdah) for young women is established. This is because when girls reach maturity, they should be made to observe veiling. This is an obligatory duty upon both the girls themselves and their guardians. The verses of the Qur'an and other authentic ahadith clearly indicate this.
