Narrated Abdullah ibn Masud: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: He who lets his garment trail during prayer out of pride, Allah, the Almighty, has nothing to do with pardoning him and protecting him from Hell.
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Umar Farooq Saeedi
637. Commentary:
➊ This hadith is authentic, and it establishes that deliberately deviating from Allah’s religion and the Sunnah of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), and opposing it, incurs an extremely severe punishment, which has been described as «فَلَيْسَ مِنْ اللَّهِ فِي حِلٍّ وَلَا حَرَامٍ». The commentators of hadith have explained that the sins of such a person are not forgiven, the ability to abstain from evil deeds is taken away, Paradise is not made lawful for him, and Hell is not made unlawful for him. He is no longer deserving of any respect from Allah. «والعياز بالله»
➋ Letting the lower garment, sheet, or trousers hang below the ankles is among the major sins, and it has been declared a sign of arrogance, which is severely disliked by Allah.
➌ Ignorance or forgetfulness may perhaps be excused by Allah in some respect, but committing such an act after having knowledge of it is included in “arrogance.”
