Narrated Buraydah ibn al-Hasib: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prohibited us to pray in a sheet of cloth without crossing both its ends, and he also prohibited us to pray in a wrapper without putting on a sheet.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Umar Farooq Saeedi
636. Commentary:
➊ Intentionally taking a small garment so that nothing can cover the shoulders, or deliberately keeping the shoulders uncovered, is impermissible. According to one's means, the clothing should be complete.

➋ In this hadith and other ahadith, there is no command or virtue established for men to cover the head during prayer. Except that in the Noble Qur'an, Allah the Exalted has given a general command in this verse: «يا بني آدم خذوا زينتكم عندكل مسجد» [الأعراف : 31]
"O children of Adam! Take your adornment at every masjid (or at every time of prayer)." That is, covering the awrah is obligatory in prayer and tawaf. For men, it is from the navel to the knees, and for women, the entire body except the face and hands. And a thin garment through which the body or hair is visible is not valid.
In any case, adopting permissible adornment during worship is desirable, and following one's base desires is forbidden. Making it a habit to remain bareheaded outside of prayer is contrary to the practices of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum), and the righteous predecessors (rahimahullah).

➌ The recommendation of a sheet over the trousers is for the purpose of covering the awrah, so that the concealed parts of the body are not visible even over the clothing.
