Narrated Al-Bara ibn Azib: When we would pray behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we liked to be on his right side. He (the Prophet) would sit turning his face towards us (and back towards the Kabah) ﷺ.

615. Commentary:
After the salam, it is Sunnah for the imam to turn from the posture of tashahhud and sit facing the congregation, in such a way that his face is slightly more towards those on his right side, while those on his left are also well within his view.

823. Commentary: In Sahih Muslim and other sources, instead of the singular form, the plural form is mentioned, i.e., "We used to prefer standing on the right side." See: [صحیح مسلم صلاة المسافرین حدیث : 709]
In addition, the reason stated for this is that the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) desired that the blessed face of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would first turn towards us. (ibid.) Also, that we would become the first recipients of his greeting, because the greeting (salam) is first turned to the right side. [صحیح ابن خزیمة حدیث : 1564]
