Hadith 613

Narrated Abdullah ibn Masud: Alqamah and al-Aswad sought permission from Abdullah (ibn Masud) for admission, and we remained sitting at his door for a long time. A slave-girl came out and gave them permission (to enter). He (Ibn Masud) then got up and prayed (standing) between me (al-Aswad) and him (Alqamah). He then said: I witnessed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ doing similarly.

Brief Explanation
1؎: When three people are performing prayer in congregation, the imam will stand in front, and both followers (muqtadis) will stand behind him. The ruling that when there are three people, the imam should stand between them has been abrogated. Ibn Sirin rahimahullah states that Ibn Mas'ud radi Allahu anhu, due to the narrowness of the place, stood in the middle instead of advancing forward (see Awn al-Ma'bud, the mentioned hadith).

613. Commentary:
Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah states in Fath al-Bari that Ibn Sirin gave the answer that perhaps this was done due to the constriction of space. Abu ‘Umar al-Namari considered this to be a statement halted (mawquf) upon Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud radi Allahu anhu, and some have declared it abrogated (mansukh), and the action of Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud has been attributed to his lack of knowledge or forgetfulness.
