Hadith 608

Anas said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered upon Umm Haram. The people (in her house) brought some cooking oil dates to him. He said; Put it (dates) back in its container and return it (cooking oil) to its bag, because I am keeping fast. He then stood and led us in prayer two Rak’ahs of supererogatory prayer. Then Umm Sulaim and Umm Haram stood behind us (i. e., the men). Thabit (the narrator) said: I understand that Anas said; he (the prophet) made me stand on his right side.

608. Commentary:
➊ At times, congregational prayer (jama‘ah) can be held for voluntary (nafl) prayers, and it is possible that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) led the prayer with the intention of imparting blessing (barakah), and it is also possible that he did so to teach them the prayer, so that the women could also closely observe the prayer of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). (Nawawi)

➋ If there are two men in the congregation, both will form a single row; the imam will stand on the left side and the follower (muqtadi) will stand to his right, and as for women, whether one or more, their row will be separate.

Hadith Commentary:
In the previous hadith, there is mention of Hajjaj, who came to Basra in 75 AH.
At that time, the age of Hazrat Anas radi Allahu anhu was a little over eighty years. He passed away around 93 AH.
His age reached nearly one hundred years.
All of this was due to the blessing of the supplication (du'a) of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
In one narration, it is mentioned that he personally buried 125 children from his own progeny; then one should estimate the number of other relatives.
The objective of this hadith for the chapter is established in this way: the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam went to the house of Umm Sulaym radi Allahu anha while in a state of fasting, and he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam returned the food at her place.
And he did not break his fast.
It is thus established that if someone else does the same, it is permissible, correct, and even in accordance with the Sunnah of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
All of this depends on the circumstances.
There may also be occasions where breaking the fast is permissible.
And some where keeping the fast is also permissible.
These are matters for each person to decide in their own heart and to understand the situation.
Innamal a‘malu bin-niyyat (Actions are only by intentions).
