From this hadith as well, it is understood that congregational prayer (salah in jama‘ah) is obligatory.
At the end of this same hadith in Abu Dawud, it is mentioned that the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) asked: “What is the excuse?” He (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) replied: “Fear and illness.”
Also, in it, instead of «لاَصَلاَۃَ…», it is stated that Allah, the Exalted, does not accept his prayer; however, there is weakness in its chain of narration.
(Sunan Abi Dawud, Kitab al-Salat, Chapter: The stern warning regarding abandoning the congregation, Hadith: 551) Furthermore, wind and rain, extremely cold wind, and fear, etc., are also included among the valid excuses.
