Narrated Abu Usayd al-Ansari: Abu Usayd heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say when he was coming out of the mosque, and men and women were mingled in the road: Draw back, for you must not walk in the middle of the road; keep to the sides of the road. Then women were keeping so close to the wall that their garments were rubbing against it.

Benefits and Issues: ➊ It is proper etiquette for women that they should always walk behind men.
➋ While walking on the road or in the street, instead of walking right in the middle, they should walk to one side; this manner is a sign of their modesty and dignity, and in this there is safety for them as well, so that no miscreant can harass them.
➌ Some scholars have classified this narration as hasan (good). (al-Saheehah, Hadith: 721)
