Narrated Abdullah ibn Habashi: The Prophet ﷺ said: If anyone cuts the lote-tree, Allah brings him headlong into Hell. Abu Dawud was asked about the meaning of this tradition. He said: This is a brief tradition. It means that if anyone cuts uselessly, unjustly and without any right a lote-tree under the shade of which travellers and beasts take shelter, Allah will bring him into Hell headlong.

Benefits and Issues:
One explanation of this hadith is the very one mentioned by Imam Abu Dawud rahimahullah, and in this meaning, not only the lote tree (beri) is included, but all such trees can be included which, in the wilderness, provide shade and comfort to travelers and to wild animals and birds.
To cut them down without reason is a great injustice. The second explanation is that what is meant here is the prohibition of cutting down the lote trees (beri) and similar other trees located within the sacred boundaries (haram) of Makkah and Madinah.
As is mentioned in the following narration.
