Hadith 5216

The tradition mentioned above has also been transmitted by Shubah through a different chain of narrators. This version has: when he came near the mosque, he said to the Ansar; stand up showing respect to your chief.

Brief Explanation
1؎: It is not correct to use this as evidence regarding standing out of respect (qiyam ta’zeem), because in Tirmidhi there is a narration from Anas radi Allahu anhu that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was the most beloved of all people, yet when he appeared, people would not stand up for him, because they knew that he did not like this. On the other hand, in Musnad Ahmad, after «قوموا إلى سيدكم», there is the addition of «فأنزلوه», which is authentic and explicitly states that the command given to the people to stand for Sa’d ibn Mu’adh radi Allahu anhu was actually so that he could be helped to dismount due to the wound he had received from an arrow, and not as an act of standing out of respect (qiyam ta’zeem).

Benefits and Issues:
➊ The literal meaning of "Qoomoo" is "stand up," but here, in the context, it means "move forward." Therefore, it is a legitimate Islamic right to show respect and honor to one's leader or elder.

➋ Advancing forward to greet, offer salam (greeting of peace), shake hands (musafaha), or, as appropriate, embrace (mu‘anaqah) is permissible.

➌ However, to show respect in the non-Arab (Ajamī) manner—where, when an important person arrives, those sitting all stand up in their places, and then, when that person gives permission or sits down, the others sit down—is completely impermissible.
What was said regarding Sayyiduna Sa‘d radi Allahu anhu was to move forward to greet him and to assist him in dismounting from his ride, as is mentioned in the narration of Musnad Ahmad: (Qoomoo ila sayyidikum fa’anziluhu).
