Hadith 5216

The tradition mentioned above has also been transmitted by Shubah through a different chain of narrators. This version has: when he came near the mosque, he said to the Ansar; stand up showing respect to your chief.

Explanation & Benefits

Benefits and Issues:
➊ The literal meaning of "Qoomoo" is "stand up," but here, in the context, it means "move forward." Therefore, it is a legitimate Islamic right to show respect and honor to one's leader or elder.

➋ Advancing forward to greet, offer salam (greeting of peace), shake hands (musafaha), or, as appropriate, embrace (mu‘anaqah) is permissible.

➌ However, to show respect in the non-Arab (Ajamī) manner—where, when an important person arrives, those sitting all stand up in their places, and then, when that person gives permission or sits down, the others sit down—is completely impermissible.
What was said regarding Sayyiduna Sa‘d radi Allahu anhu was to move forward to greet him and to assist him in dismounting from his ride, as is mentioned in the narration of Musnad Ahmad: (Qoomoo ila sayyidikum fa’anziluhu).
