حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ , حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَالِدٍ الْأَحْمَرُ , عَنْ أَبِي غِفَارٍ , عَنْ أَبِي تَمِيمَةَ الْهُجَيْمِيِّ , عَنْ أَبِي جُرَيٍّ الْهُجَيْمِيِّ , قَالَ : " أَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ , فَقُلْتُ : عَلَيْكَ السَّلَامُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ , قَالَ : لَا تَقُلْ عَلَيْكَ السَّلَامُ , فَإِنَّ عَلَيْكَ السَّلَامُ تَحِيَّةُ الْمَوْتَى " .
Narrated Abu Jurayy al-Hujaymi: I came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: Upon you be peace, Messenger of Allah! He said: Do not say: Upon you be peace, for "Upon you be peace" is the salutation to the dead.

Benefits and Issues:
The one initiating the greeting should say (as-salamu alaykum or as-salamu alayk), and the one responding should say (wa alaykum as-salam or wa alayka as-salam), that is, the letter "wa" should be added in the response.
Simply saying "alayka as-salam" in either initiating or responding to the greeting is not correct in any way.

Benefits and Issues:
➊ The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam)’s status and rank were well known and recognized by the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum), such that whatever he commanded, they would listen and obey. Now, likewise, every believer should strive to act upon whatever command of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) becomes known to him.
➋ The Sunnah is that when entering a graveyard, one should say to the deceased: (As-salamu alaykum ya ahl al-qubur) — “Peace be upon you, O inhabitants of the graves.” What is mentioned in the hadith (i.e., ‘alayka as-salam’) was perhaps the manner of the Age of Ignorance (Jahiliyyah), as they used to say ‘alayka as-salam’.
➌ A Muslim should supplicate only and exclusively to Allah for every small and great, outward and inward need, for He alone is the One who hears and accepts.
➍ It does not befit any believer to curse or revile anything.
➎ One should never consider any good deed insignificant or trivial.
➏ One should always meet one’s Muslim brothers with cheerfulness, happiness, open-heartedness, and a smiling face.
➐ A man should express masculine qualities in his clothing, one of which is that the lower garment (such as the izar or shalwar) should be above the ankles.
➑ Having the sheet or trousers below the ankles is a sign of arrogance or effeminacy. And if someone says, “I do not do this out of arrogance,” then this very statement is itself arrogance, for instead of acting upon the explicit command of the Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), he makes a baseless excuse.
➒ To act sincerely upon such apparently ordinary and small deeds is proof that this person is a believer, even though these deeds are not small, for through their blessing, one can hope to attain other great virtues. And as for the one who does not act upon them, what hope can there be that he will accomplish great and weighty good deeds?
➓ Not shaming your Muslim brother over his fault is a matter of great resolve; however, you should advise him in an appropriate and good manner.
