Narrated A woman from Banu an-Najjar: Urwah ibn az-Zubayr reported on the authority of a woman from Banu an-Najjar. She said: My house was the loftiest of all the houses around the mosque (of the Prophet at Madina). Bilal used to make a call to the morning prayer from it. He would come there before the break of dawn and wait for it. When he saw it, he would yawn and say: O Allah, I praise you and seek Your assistance for the Quraysh so that they might establish Thine religion. He then would make the call to prayer. She (the narrator) said: By Allah, I do not know whether he ever left saying these words on any night.

519. Commentary:
➊ It is recommended (mustahabb) to call the adhan (call to prayer) in a loud voice and from a high place, but nowadays loudspeakers have fulfilled this requirement.
➋ The supplicatory words (du‘a) of Bilal radi Allahu anhu before the adhan were in no way a part of the adhan itself. Rather, this was a general type of supplication in which he would remain engaged for quite some time while waiting for the true dawn (subh sadiq). The reason for praying for the guidance of the Quraysh was that this tribe held great importance among the Arabs. Due to their opposition, the general Arabs were also refraining from accepting Islam. When Allah granted this tribe the ability to accept Islam, then people began entering Islam in large groups.
