Hadith 5094

Narrated Umm Salamah, Ummul Muminin: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ never went out of my house without raising his eye to the sky and saying: "O Allah! I seek refuge in Thee lest I stray or be led astray, or slip or made to slip, or cause injustice, or suffer injustice, or do wrong, or have wrong done to me. "

Benefits and Issues:

There is a difference of opinion regarding the chain of narration of this report.
Because of this, according to some scholars it is weak, according to others it is authentic, and according to yet others it is hasan.
And Allah knows best.

This is an extremely great and comprehensive supplication.
And indeed, without the special grace of Allah, it is impossible for a person
to attain outward and inward goodness,
or to receive good from others, or to be protected from their evil.

Explanation:
1:
I begin in the name of Allah,
I place my trust in Allah,
O Allah, I seek Your protection from deviating from truth and correctness,
or from being led astray from the path of truth,
or that I commit injustice against someone or that injustice is done to me,
or that I behave ignorantly towards someone or that someone behaves ignorantly towards me.

The mentioned narration has been declared weak in its chain (sanad) by our esteemed researcher and some other scholars. However, Shaykh al-Albani and Dr. Bashar Awwad have declared it authentic (sahih). Both of these latter shuyukh have erred in authenticating this narration. The correct and preferred opinion is that this narration is weak, because it is not established that al-Sha‘bi heard from Umm Salamah (radi Allahu anha). In addition, the other two narrations in this chapter are also, by consensus of the researchers, weak. Therefore, to our knowledge, there is no Sunnah supplication (masnun du‘a) for when leaving the house. And Allah knows best.

“Improper conduct” is the translation of ignorance. Ignorance is the opposite of knowledge. All the harms that can arise from ignorance will be referred to as ignorance itself. In matters of the rights of people (huquq al-‘ibad), ignorance becomes the cause of improper conduct, because when one does not have knowledge of another’s rights, how can one behave properly with them?
