باب مَا يُقَالُ عِنْدَ النَّوْمِChapter: What to say when going to sleep.

حَدَّثَنَا جَعْفَرُ بْنُ مُسَافِرٍ التِّنِّيسِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ حَسَّانَ ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ حَمْزَةَ ، عَنْ ثَوْرٍ ، عَنْ خَالِدِ بْنِ مَعْدَانَ ، عَنْ أَبِي الْأَزْهَرِ الْأَنْمَارِيِّ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ " إِذَا أَخَذَ مَضْجَعَهُ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ ، قَالَ : بِسْمِ اللَّهِ وَضَعْتُ جَنْبِي ، اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي ذَنْبِي وَأَخْسِئْ شَيْطَانِي وَفُكَّ رِهَانِي وَاجْعَلْنِي فِي النَّدِيِّ الْأَعْلَى " , قال أبو داود : رَوَاهُ أَبُو هَمَّامٍ الْأَهْوَازِيُّ ، عَنْ ثَوْرٍ ، قَالَ أَبُو زُهَيْرٍ الْأَنْمَارِيُّ .
Narrated Abul Azhar al-Anmari: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went to his bed at night, he would say: in the name of Allah, I have laid down my side for Allah. O Allah! forgive me my sin, drive away my devil, free me from my responsibility, and place me in the highest assembly. Abu Dawud said: Abu Hammam al-Ahwazi transmitted it from Thawr. He mentioned Abu Zuhair al-Anmari (instead of Abu al-Azhar).

Benefits and Issues:
It has been mentioned regarding the appointed angel with the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) in contrast to the shaytan or qareen,
that he too had accepted Islam and become obedient and submissive.
And he (the qareen) would only tell you (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) good things.
(Sahih Muslim, Sifat al-Munafiqin, Hadith: 2814) The Prophet’s (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) saying in this supplication (akhsi’ shaytani) is in a general sense.
