Narrated Abdullah ibn Amir: My mother called me one day when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sitting in our house. She said: Come here and I shall give you something. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked her: What did you intend to give him? She replied: I intended to give him some dates. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: If you were not to give him anything, a lie would be recorded against you.

Brief Explanation
1؎ : It is understood from this that if it is not permissible for a mother to call her child by lying for her own need, then how can it ever be permissible to speak falsely with an adult? In other words, even if it is done in jest, it is prohibited (haram).
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Umar Farooq Saeedi
Benefits and Issues: The matter of speaking the truth and lying is not limited only to adults; it also applies to small children. In fact, some of the righteous (salihin) have extended it even to animals: that if a person calls an animal with a certain sound or shakes his lap as if to indicate that there is grass or grain in it, while in reality there is nothing, they consider this to be a lie as well. In any case, lying is a reprehensible trait. One should always avoid it. Except for three situations, which have already been mentioned previously (Hadith: 4920-21). Some researchers have classified the aforementioned narration as hasan (good).
