Abu Masud asked Abu Abu Allah, or Abu Abdullah asked Abu Masud; what did you hear the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say about za’ama (they alleged, asserted, or it is said). He replied: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: it is a bad riding-beast for a man (to say) za’ama (they asserted). Abu DAwud said: This Abu Abdullah is Hudhaifah.

Brief Explanation
1؎: Since «زعموا» pertains to such statements and words that are uncertain and have no connection to reality, therefore the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) has prohibited making this word a means for one’s own purpose and, using it as a pretext, saying anything that is unverified and does not reach the level of proof.

Benefits and Issues:
It is very wrong to transmit to others hearsay or baseless matters from people without investigation and verification. Many people are quite cunning in forwarding their suspicions, doubts, or lies with embellishment and evasion; especially, this is a distinguishing feature of the current irreligious journalism.
