Narrated Umar ibn al-Khattab: Zayd ibn Aslam quoted his father as saying: Umar ibn al-Khattab (Allah be pleased with him) struck one of his sons who was given the kunyah Abu Isa, and al-Mughirah ibn Shubah had the kunyah Abu Isa. Umar said to him: Is it not sufficient for you that you are called by the kunyah Abu Abdullah? He replied: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave me this kunyah. Thereupon he said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was forgiven all his sins, past and those followed. But we are among the people similar to us. Henceforth he was called by the kunyah Abu Abdullah until he died.

1؎: Umar radi Allahu anhu forbade the use of the kunyah (patronymic) Abu Isa for the reason that there was a concern people might fall into the misconception that Isa alayhis salam (Jesus, peace be upon him) also had a father. This is why Umar radi Allahu anhu said that adopting this kunyah is among the special characteristics of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
2؎: The purpose is that we are ordinary Muslims, and we do not know what our end will be.
Explanation & Benefits

Benefits and Issues: It is permissible to adopt the kunyah (patronymic) Abu Isa; however, it is better to avoid it. This is so that the honor of Isa (alayhis salam) remains preserved even verbally, and so that no one is led to suspect that Isa (alayhis salam) also had a father.
