Ibn Umar said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ changed the name of ‘Asiyah and called her Jamilah.
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Umar Farooq Saeedi
Benefits and Issues:
The Arabs used to name (their children) ‘Aas’ and ‘Aasiyah’.
By these names, they intended (the meaning of) one who rejects oppression, transgression, and evil.
However, the word also carries the meaning of ‘disobedience’ (rebellion).
Therefore, this name was changed.

Hadith Commentary:
Benefits and Issues:
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) forbade three types of names:
➊ Those whose meanings are objectionable,
such as ‘Asiyah’,
meaning disobedient,
whereas disobedience does not befit a Muslim,
let alone naming someone disobedient.
➋ Names from which there is a fear of bad omen,
while taking bad omens is not permissible,
such as Aflah,
Najeeh, and Yasar, etc.
➌ Names in which self-praise and self-purification are presented,
such as Barrah,
meaning loyal,
obedient,
even though this also falls under the second category and there is a fear of bad omen in the case of negation.

Benefits and Issues:
(‘Aasiyah)
The meaning is "disobedient."
A Muslim is obedient, therefore this name is disliked.
The believing wife of Pharaoh was named "Asiyah."
It is permissible to keep this name.
