Narrated Aishah, Ummul Muminin: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived after the expedition to Tabuk or Khaybar (the narrator is doubtful), the draught raised an end of a curtain which was hung in front of her store-room, revealing some dolls which belonged to her. He asked: What is this? She replied: My dolls. Among them he saw a horse with wings made of rags, and asked: What is this I see among them? She replied: A horse. He asked: What is this that it has on it? She replied: Two wings. He asked: A horse with two wings? She replied: Have you not heard that Solomon had horses with wings? She said: Thereupon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed so heartily that I could see his molar teeth.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Umar Farooq Saeedi
Benefits and Issues:
➊ Not only is it permissible for boys and girls, but it is their natural right that opportunities for play be provided to them. However, it is obligatory that their amusements be in harmony with the spirit of the Shari‘ah.

➋ If girls, on their own, make dolls and figurines by hand, it is permissible. And these are not included among those prohibited images whose making or keeping is unlawful. However, it should be kept in mind that in the present era, the advanced and modern forms of these toys—made from plastic, cloth, stone, etc., and which are exact replicas of real beings—regarding them, the preferred opinion is that they are not permissible. Furthermore, in some homes, these are prominently displayed as decoration, for which there can be no allowance whatsoever.
