Hadith 4929

Umm Salamah said that the Prophet ﷺ came upon her when there was with her a hermaohrodite (mukhannath) who said to her brother Abdullah (b. Abi Umayyah): if Allah conquers al-Ta’if for you tomorrow, I shall lead you to a woman who has four folds of fats in front and eight behind. Thereupon the Prophet ﷺ said: Put them out of your houses. Abu Dawud said: The woman had four folds of fat on her belly.

Benefits and Issues:
Allowing people of corrupt disposition to come and go in homes becomes a means of increasing corruption in society.
Therefore, it is necessary to keep one’s homes purified from such individuals.
In the present era, radios, televisions, VCRs, satellite dishes, cable, as well as magazines and newspapers containing nude images, all fall under this same category, and in reality, the unspeakable effects of these things are clearly evident in our homes and environment.
And to Allah is the complaint.
It is obligatory to rid oneself of these things.

Hadith Commentary:
Because when he recognizes the beauty and ugliness of women, he will go and relate your circumstances to other men as well.
Hafiz (rahimahullah) said: From this hadith, the ruling of veiling (hijab) is also derived for those who can recognize the beauty and ugliness of women, even if they are effeminate men or eunuchs.
Later, Hazrat Ghailan (radi Allahu anhu) and his daughters became Muslim.
There were ten women in Ghailan’s house; the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) ordered him to keep only four and to leave the rest.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
There are two types of eunuchs:
One is those who are so by birth; they are considered under the same rulings as women. This is why the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) did not prohibit him.
The second type is those who become eunuchs by affectation; this act is blameworthy, and such people are prohibited from coming to women.
(2)
Hafiz Ibn Hajar (rahimahullah) has written that women should observe veiling (purdah) even from those who can recognize the beauty and ugliness (good looks and bad looks) of women, even if they are effeminate men or eunuchs.
(Fath al-Bari: 9/417)
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) expelled all such eunuchs from Madinah Tayyibah so that they would not corrupt the atmosphere of Madinah.
And Allah knows best.

Because when the thing being distinguished (mumayyiz) is not mentioned, both masculine and feminine forms in the number are correct.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
There are four folds on the front side of a woman’s belly, and when she turns her back, these same four folds appear on the sides, making a total of eight folds. Among the Arabs, a woman having such a plump body was considered a sign of beauty.

(2)
This hadith shows that individuals with a corrupt disposition should be expelled from homes. Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah writes that whoever causes harm to people or creates disorder in society, it is legislated to expel him from there until he refrains. (Fath al-Bari: 10/411)

(3)
Things that cause social corruption should also be thrown out of the house. In the present era, radios, televisions, VCRs, satellite dishes, cable, and newspapers and magazines containing nude images all fall under this category. Mobile phones with cameras also create disorder in society; thus, the harmful effects of these things can be clearly seen in our homes. And Allah is the one whose help is sought.

Hadith Commentary:

The people of the tribe of Hawazin, after being defeated in the Battle of Hunayn, came to Autas.
When they suffered a setback there as well, they fortified themselves in Ta’if.
They gathered food supplies from the surrounding villages and besieged themselves, so the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) deemed it necessary to lay siege to Ta’if.
The incident mentioned in the hadith occurred during this very siege.

Abdullah bin Abi Umayyah (radi Allahu anhu), who was the brother of Umm Salamah (radi Allahu anha), accepted Islam at the time of the conquest of Makkah along with Abu Sufyan bin Harith (radi Allahu anhu).
The mukhannath (effeminate man) was his freed slave. The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) considered him harmless and had permitted him to enter the house.
When he described to the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) the attributes of Badiah bint Ghilan in front of Abdullah bin Abi Umayyah (radi Allahu anhu), and described her obesity in a particular manner, it became clear that these people also have a deep interest in women, as if they are flirtatious types. So the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) prohibited him from entering the house, and after arriving in Madinah Tayyibah, expelled him from Madinah.
When the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) passed away, Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) refused to allow him to return.
When Umar (radi Allahu anhu) was chosen as caliph, it was requested of him that the mukhannath had become weak and feeble, so he should be allowed only to come to Madinah on Fridays, collect eight days’ worth of expenses from the people, and then return to his place. So he granted him this much permission.
(‘Umdat al-Qari: 12/298)

Umm Salamah bint Umayyah’s (radi Allahu anha) brother, Abdullah bin Abi Umayyah (radi Allahu anhu), was martyred in the Battle of Ta’if.
He was struck by an arrow from an unknown direction, which proved fatal.
(Fath al-Bari: 8/55)

Note:
.
Among the Arabs, a fat woman is considered desirable.
Badiah bint Ghilan was also plump and very robust. The way the mukhannath described her obesity, Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) has provided a beautiful explanation: due to her being overweight, there were four folds on her stomach, so from the back, four could be seen on the right side and four on the left side, thus making eight folds visible from the back.

Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues: There are two types of mukhannath (effeminate men).

(1)
The hermaphrodite (khuntha) who, by nature, adopts the manners of women, their movements and stillness, and their ways and habits—he is religiously excused and is not blameworthy. He should, however, try to change his behavior and mannerisms that resemble those of women.

(2)
The effeminate man who deliberately and intentionally tries to adopt the behavior and speech of women—he is blameworthy, even if he does not commit any immoral act. The mukhannath named Hit had said to Abdullah, the brother of Umm Salamah radi Allahu anha, and Abdur Rahman, the brother of Aisha radi Allahu anha, that after the conquest of Ta’if, he would inform them about a daughter of the chief of Thaqif, Ghaylan bin Salamah, named Badiah. She is very plump, fresh, and attractive according to the Arab temperament, so they should try to marry her.

Benefits and Issues:

There are two types of mukhannath (effeminate men):
One is those who are, by birth, deprived of sexual power and do not possess such desires.
The second are those who, despite possessing masculine qualities, adopt feminine appearance and mannerisms.
If individuals of the first type are completely oblivious to sexual matters and their attention is only towards eating and drinking, then the command to observe veiling (hijab) with them is not strict. However, if they are aware of sexual matters and take interest in such conversations, then veiling should be observed with them just as with ordinary men.

A person who is, by birth, a man but wears women’s clothing and adopts their appearance should not be allowed to enter the house.
For a man to become like a woman is a cause of curse (la’nah).

A non-mahram man or a mukhannath should not go to women without hesitation.
If he does come, then women should observe veiling.

Maulana Ataullah Sajid
Benefits and Issues:

By "mukhannath" is meant a person whose sexual organs resemble both those of men and women. Such a person is not capable of living a married life, neither as a man nor as a woman. If the resemblance to one gender is greater, then he can be counted among that gender.

In Arabia, such individuals wear clothes like men and work outside the home like men.

Among them, any person who takes an interest in matters specific to women should be veiled from.

Among them, those who have no interest in sexual matters and are only concerned with eating and drinking can be counted among those referred to as ﴿غَيْرِأُولِي الْإِرْبَةِ مِنَ الرِّجَالِ﴾ (al-Nur 24:31) — that is, men who have no desire. For such men, veiling is not obligatory upon women.

Benefit:
It is established from this hadith that every action which spreads obscenity should not be done, and strict vigilance should be maintained over anything that becomes a cause for it. Furthermore, this hadith mentions a bad habit of effeminate men (mukhannathun) that they observe women and comment on what a certain woman is like and what another is like, but not all of them are the same. This hadith also proves that they should be prohibited from mixing with women. In common language, a mukhannath is referred to as "khawaja sara" or "khusra."
