Hadith 489

حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ ، عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ بْنِ عُمَيْرٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي ذَرّ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " جُعِلَتْ لِي الْأَرْضُ طَهُورًا وَمَسْجِدًا " .
Narrated Abu Dharr: The earth has been made for me purifying and as a mosque (place for prayer).

489. Commentary:
➊ This is a distinctive feature of the Ummah of Muhammad (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) that, in general, we can perform prayer (salah) anywhere. Except for a few specific places, which will be mentioned ahead. Whereas, for previous communities, there was a restriction that they could only perform prayer in their designated places of worship.
➋ It is permissible to perform tayammum (dry ablution) with pure earth and all its types.
