Hadith 486

Anas bin Malik reported: A man entered the mosque on camel and made it kneel down, and then tied his leg with rope. He then asked: Who among you is Muhammad? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sitting leaning upon something among them. We said to him: This white (man) who is leaning. The man said: O son of Abd al-Muttalib. The Prophet ﷺ said; I already responded to you. The man (again) said: O Muhammad. I am asking you. The narrator then narrated the rest of the tradition.

486. Commentary:
➊ This narration appears in detail in Sahih Bukhari. He said: “If there is any harshness in my questioning, please do not take it to heart.” The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “Ask whatever you wish to ask.” He said: “I ask you by the Lord of you and those before you, has Allah sent you as a Messenger to all people?” The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam replied: “Yes, absolutely.” He said: “I ask you by Allah, has Allah commanded you to establish five prayers during the day and night?” The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam replied: “Yes, absolutely.” He said: “I ask you by Allah, has Allah commanded you to fast during this month every year?” The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam replied: “Yes, absolutely.” He said: “I ask you by Allah, has Allah commanded you to take zakat from our wealthy and distribute it among our poor?” The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam replied: “Yes, absolutely.” Then he said: “I believe in what you have brought, and I am the representative of my people who are behind me. My name is Dhamam ibn Tha’labah and I belong to the tribe of Banu Sa’d ibn Bakr.”

➋ From this hadith and the following ahadith, it is established that non-Muslims—whether Jews, Christians, Hindus, Magians, or others—may enter mosques for any reasonable need. However, the noble verse of the Qur’an «إِنَّمَا الْمُشْرِكُونَ نَجَسٌ فَلَا يَقْرَبُوا الْمَسْجِدَ الْحَرَامَ بَعْدَ عَامِهِمْ هَـٰذَا» [تو بة : 28]
“The polytheists are impure, so let them not approach al-Masjid al-Haram after this year”
refers to their spiritual impurity, meaning their creed is impure. And in this verse, Muslims are taught that the dominance of the disbelievers over the House of Allah that existed until now has been abolished, so in the future, these people should not come here with their polytheistic rituals or for their expression. It is obligatory upon all Muslims to ensure both the outward and spiritual purity and protection of the House of Allah.
