Hadith 4847

Narrated Qaylah daughter of Makhramah: She saw the Prophet ﷺ sitting with his arms round his legs. She said: When I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in such humble condition in the sitting position (according to Musa's version), I trembled with fear.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Umar Farooq Saeedi
Benefits and Issues:
➊ Ihtiba’ and qurfusa’ here both have the same meaning; this is a manner of sitting, the explanation of which is present in the translation. A person sometimes sits in this way even in a gathering. In it, there is an expression of humility, modesty, and submissiveness. However, sitting in this manner during the Friday sermon (khutbah) is prohibited. See: (Sunan Abi Dawud, Salah: Hadith: 1110)

➋ The trembling of Hazrat Qaylah radi Allahu anha was due to the impression that when the outward sitting of a great personality like the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is such a manifestation of submissiveness and humility, then what must be his inward state, and how heedless are we ordinary people.

➌ From this hadith, it is also derived that despite his utmost humility and submissiveness, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was extremely awe-inspiring and majestic. And all of this was the result of sincerity for Allah and fear of Him.

➍ Every believer should adopt an attitude of humility in his sitting and standing. This does not diminish one’s dignity; rather, it increases it.

➎ Both of the aforementioned narrations are, in terms of chain, weak, but on the basis of other supporting evidences, they reach the level of hasan or sahih, as our own esteemed researcher has written after mentioning the reference of Sahih Bukhari in the research of hadith number 4846, that it suffices for it, i.e., the narration of Bukhari is sufficient for this. In addition, Shaykh al-Albani rahimahullah has declared the first narration sahih and the second hasan. For details, see: (al-Sahihah, Hadith: 867, al-Tirmidhi, Hadith: 6979)
