حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ عَوْنٍ ، أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ ، عَنْ حَيْوَةَ بْنِ شُرَيْحٍ ، عَنْ سَالِمِ بْنِ غَيْلَانَ ، عَنْ الْوَلِيدِ بْنِ قَيْسٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ ، أَوْ عَنْ أَبِي الْهَيْثَمِ ، عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " لَا تُصَاحِبْ إِلَّا مُؤْمِنًا وَلَا يَأْكُلْ طَعَامَكَ إِلَّا تَقِيٌّ " .
Narrated Abu Saeed al-Khudri: The Prophet ﷺ said: Associate only with a believer, and let only a God-fearing man eat your meals.

Benefits and Issues:
➊ In Persian it is said: “The company of the righteous makes you righteous, the company of the wicked makes you wicked.” Through companionship and gatherings, a person adopts the habits and ways of his companion, and gradually love for him settles in the heart, and the matter can reach to religion and creed. Therefore, it is obligatory to avoid the company of the impious and wicked except for the people of faith.
➋ In charity and gifts, priority is given to the people of faith and the people of piety; others are of a secondary level, though doing good to them also brings reward. As Allah the Exalted says: (وَيُطْعِمُونَ الطَّعَامَ عَلَى حُبِّهِ مِسْكِينًا وَيَتِيمًا وَأَسِيرًا) — The people of faith, out of love for Allah, feed the needy, the orphan, and the captive. And captives can be of any kind: Muslim, impious, wicked, or disbeliever. The same applies to the matter of orphans and the needy.
