Hadith 4798

حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ يَعْنِي الْإِسْكَنْدَرَانِيَّ ، عَنْ عَمْرٍو ، عَنْ الْمُطَّلِبِ ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ ، قَالَتْ : سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، يَقُولُ : إِنَّ الْمُؤْمِنَ لَيُدْرِكُ بِحُسْنِ خُلُقِهِ دَرَجَةَ الصَّائِمِ الْقَائِمِ " .
Narrated Aishah, Ummul Muminin: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: By his good character a believer will attain the degree of one who prays during the night and fasts during the day.

Benefits and Issues:
By good character (husn al-khuluq) is meant those habits which are recognized by Islamic law (shari‘ah) and are considered excellent in common custom (‘urf).
It is necessary to observe both the rights of Allah (huquq Allah) and the rights of people (huquq al-‘ibad) in this regard.
Such good character which is devoid of fulfilling the rights of Allah is not valid.
Similarly, if someone fulfills the rights of Allah but is negligent or excessive regarding the rights of people, then this too is in no way acceptable or praiseworthy.
