Umar bin al-Khattab reported the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as saying: Do not sit with those who believe in free will and do not address them before they address you.

1؎: Jahmiyyah: A well-known sect among the people of innovation (Ahl al-Bid‘ah) which denies the attributes of Allah and claims that the Qur’an is created. A great number of the Imams of the religion have declared them disbelievers (performed takfir upon them).
‘Umar reported God’s messenger as saying, “Do not sit with those who believe in freewill and do not address them before they address you." Abu Dawud transmitted it.

Hadith Authentication: The chain of narration for this report is weak. ◈ Hakim bin Shurayk al-Hudhali is majhool (unknown). See: [تقريب التهذيب 1475] He has only been declared trustworthy (thiqah) by Ibn Hibban. ◈ Besides Sunan Abi Dawud, this narration is also found with the same chain in Sahih Ibn Hibban [الاحسان : 79], Musnad Ahmad [1؍30], Al-Mustadrak of Al-Hakim [1؍85 ح287], Al-Tarikh al-Kabir of Al-Bukhari [3؍15], and Al-Sunnah by Ibn Abi Asim [330].
