Hadith 4674

Abu Hurairah reported the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as saying: I do not know whether Tubba was accursed or not, and ‘Uzair (Azra was a prophet or not).

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Umar Farooq Saeedi
Benefits and Issues:
➊ The tribe of Saba, Himyar, used to call their king "Tubb‘a".
This nation was destroyed due to denying the prophets and due to polytheism, as mentioned in Surah al-Dukhan: (أَهُمْ خَيْرٌ أَمْ قَوْمُ تُبَّعٍ وَالَّذِينَ مِنْ قَبْلِهِمْ أَهْلَكْنَاهُمْ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا مُجْرِمِينَ) "Are they (the polytheists of Makkah) better or the people of Tubba‘ and those before them? We destroyed them, for they were criminals."
And in Surah Qaf: (وَأَصْحَابُ الْأَيْكَةِ وَقَوْمُ تُبَّعٍ كُلٌّ كَذَّبَ الرُّسُلَ فَحَقَّ وَعِيدِ) "The people of the thicket and the people of Tubba‘—all denied the messengers, so My warning was fulfilled against them." The meaning of the statement of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is that on the Day of Resurrection, who will have what rank with Allah in terms of good or evil—nothing can be said about this. Also, regarding those individuals about whom the Qur’an has not given clarification, no one is permitted to declare them a prophet from themselves.
It is reported regarding one Tubba‘ that he became a Muslim, so he should not be spoken of badly.

➋ In the narrations of al-Mustadrak al-Hakim, Ibn ‘Asakir, and others, instead of ‘Uzayr, Dhu’l-Qarnayn is mentioned; it is not known whether he was a prophet or not.
It is well-known regarding ‘Uzayr that he was a prophet.
