Hadith 4670

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ يَحْيَى الْحَرَّانِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْحَاق ، عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيل بْنِ أَبِي حَكِيمٍ ، عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ ، قَالَ : كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ : " مَا يَنْبَغِي لِنَبِيٍّ أَنْ يَقُولَ : إِنِّي خَيْرٌ مِنْ يُونُسَ بْنِ مَتَّى " .
Abdullah bin Jafar reported the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as saying: It is not fitting for a prophet to say: I am better than Jonah son of matta.

Benefits and Issues:
The name of Yunus (alayhis salam) was mentioned because it is specifically clarified regarding him that he left his town without permission, and as a result, he was made to reach the belly of the fish. There, he continued to recite: "There is no deity except You; You are exalted. Indeed, I am among the wrongdoers." (لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ سُبْحَانَكَ إِنِّي كُنْتُ مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ) (). As a result of this, he was granted deliverance, and such a thing is not mentioned about any other prophet. Despite this, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) did not even approve that, by comparing him to yourself, your own superiority should be expressed.
