Hadith 4654

Abu Hurairah reported the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as saying – will be according to the version of Musa: Perhaps Allah, and Ibn Sinan’s version has: Allah looked at the participants of the battle of Badr (with mercy) and said: Do whatever you wish ; I have forgiven you.

Brief Explanation
1؎ : This means that if, after this, any of the Companions of Badr (Sahabah radi Allahu anhum) were to perform an action contrary to the will of Allah, He would not hold them accountable for it, because He has already forgiven them. This absolutely does not mean that they are being given permission to commit evil deeds, nor that they will not be questioned in this world. Rather, if—God forbid—they were to commit an act in this world that warrants a prescribed punishment (hadd), then the hadd would indeed be carried out.

Benefits and Issues:

When these people resolved to sacrifice themselves for the elevation of the religion, they attained the highest standard of sincerity and faith.
Therefore, they were given such a tremendous glad tidings.
This great deed of theirs was far greater than all their other deeds, whether positive or negative.

The meaning of the statement mentioned in the hadith was by no means that they became exempt from the legal (shar‘i) and moral boundaries and restrictions.
No, rather, in this statement there is truthful information from Allah Ta‘ala regarding them that these people, for the rest of their lives, would continue to fulfill the requirements of the religion and the Shari‘ah, and nothing would occur from them that would cause Allah ‘Azza wa Jall’s displeasure or lead them to Hellfire. In this, there is no implication that they are infallible from error; rather, it is a glad tidings that all their shortcomings will be forgiven.
Radi Allahu ‘anhum.
So, woe to those people who highlight their ijtihadi mistakes and consider taunting and criticizing them to be a service to history.
Verily, we belong to Allah and to Him we shall return.
