Hadith 4632

Ibn Abbas said: Abu Hurairah said that a man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: I saw (in my dream) a piece of cloud from which ghee and honey were dropping. I saw the people spreading their hands. Some of them took much and some a little. I also saw a rope hanging from Heaven to Earth. I saw, Messenger of Allah, that you caught hold of it and ascended by it. Then another man caught hold of it and ascended it. Then another man caught hold of it and ascended it. Then another man caught hold of it, but it broke, and then it was joined and he ascended it. Abu Bakr said: May my parents be sacrificed for you, if you allow, I shall interpret it. He said: Interpret it. He said: The piece of cloud is the cloud of Islam; the ghee and honey that were dropping from it are the Quran, which contains softness and sweetness. Those who received much or little of it are those who learn much or little of the Quran. The rope hanging from Heaven to Earth is the truth which you are following. You catch hold of it and then Allah will raise you to Him. Then another man will catch hold of it and ascend it, Then another man will catch hold of it and it will break. But it will be joined and he will ascend it. Tell me. Messenger of Allah, whether I am right or wrong. He said: You are partly right and partly wrong. He said: I adjure you by Allah, you should tell me where I am wrong. The Prophet ﷺ said: Do not take an oath.

Benefits and Issues:

True and excellent dreams have been declared as the forty-sixth part of Prophethood for the believer, and through them, a servant is informed of certain matters or warned about certain affairs.

In the aforementioned dream, there was an indication towards the Caliphate of Prophethood, which our master Abu Bakr as-Siddiq radi Allahu anhu rightly understood. What was the mistake in this? So, to pursue this matter is absolutely not permissible. When the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam did not clarify it explicitly, then what right does anyone else have to say anything based on conjecture and estimation?

If someone is asked to swear by using the word "oath," its fulfillment does not become obligatory.

It is permissible for a student or a junior, with the permission of his teacher or elder, to answer a question or to discuss it in his presence. This will not be considered disrespectful. However, to speak without permission will indeed be considered disrespectful.

Will you leave me to interpret it,
Will you permit me to explain its interpretation,
From this it is understood that,
In the presence of an elder, a younger person may, with his permission,
Express his knowledge.

Benefits and Issues:

With the permission of an elder or teacher, an ordinary person or student may interpret (a dream).

By “holding the rope” is meant acting upon the religion, and the three elders holding this rope refers to being appointed to the position of succession and caliphate in the place of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).

The rope breaking for Uthman (radi Allahu anhu) after Abu Bakr and Umar (radi Allahu anhuma) points to the difficulties and tribulations that he faced. And after the rope is rejoined and he ascends by means of it, this likely indicates that he will be upon the truth in this tribulation; therefore, he will be in Paradise along with the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and both Rightly Guided Caliphs (radi Allahu anhuma).

For some wisdom, it is permissible to explain only part of a dream’s interpretation and not another part, just as the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) did not clarify the mistake that occurred in Abu Bakr’s (radi Allahu anhu) interpretation.

In this true dream, the greatness and status of the three caliphs is expressed.
