Ibn Awn said: If we learnt that the remark of al-Hasan would reach the extent that it has reached, we would write a book for his withdrawal and call witnesses to him; but we said: This is a remark that surprisingly came out (from him) and it will not be transmitted to others.

1؎: Many of the statements of Hasan al-Basri rahimahullah have been adapted by people to suit their own misguided innovations, whereas his own intent in those statements was not what the people of innovation have fabricated. This is exactly what Ibn ‘Awn states: If we had realized that these people would misinterpret his words and mislead others, we would have established the incorrectness of this from Hasan al-Basri himself, we would have asked him, he would have answered, and we would have had people bear witness to it. But at that time, we did not realize this. Now, after him, the people of innovation have attributed hundreds of false statements to him, from which he is free.
