Hadith 4381

Abu Umamah said: A man came to the prophet ﷺ and said: Messenger of Allah! I have committed a crime which involves prescribed punishment so inflict it on me. He said: Have you not performed ablution when you came? He said: Yes, He said: Have you not prayed with us when we prayed ? He said: Yes. He then said: Go off, for Allah, the Exalted, forgave you.

Benefits and Issues:
➊ Without explicit mention of the crime, no prescribed punishment (hadd) can be applied merely on the basis of an admission.

➋ When faith becomes firmly rooted in a person's heart and he becomes concerned about his Hereafter, he makes every effort to leave this world purified and to present himself before Allah in a state of cleanliness.

➌ Ablution (wudu), congregational prayer, and all kinds of righteous deeds continue to serve as expiation for a person's minor slips.

Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues: Collectively, the narrations establish that here the meaning of "limit" (had) refers to sin itself, which the person, due to the strength of his faith, considered to be a grave matter. And the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said, "In ablution (wudu) and prayer (salah), when a Muslim seeks forgiveness from Allah, and after ablution says 'Allahumma ighfir li' (O Allah, forgive me), then this very supplication becomes a means of forgiveness for him. Because if these supplications are recited with awareness and consciousness, keeping their meanings in view, then they contain repentance (tawbah) within them."
