Khalid bin Sumair said: Abdullah bin Rabah al-Ansari, whom the Ansar called faqih (juries), came to us from Madina, and reported us on the authority of Abu Qatadah al-Ansari, the horseman of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent a military expedition consisting of the chief Companions. He then narrated the same story, saying Nothing awakened us except the rising sun. We stoop up in bewilderment, for our prayer. The Prophet ﷺ said: Wait a little, wait a little. When the sun rose high, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Those who sued to observer the two rak'ahs of Fajr prayer (sunnah prayer before obligatory prayer) should observe them. Then those who used to observe and those who would not observe stood up and said prayer. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded to call for prayer; the call for prayer was made accordingly. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood and led us in prayer. When he turned away (from the prayer) he said: We thank Allah for the fact that we were not engaged in any wordily affairs which detained us from our prayer. Instead our souls were in the hands of Allah. He released them whenever He wished. If any one of you gets morning prayer tomorrow at its proper time, he should offer a similar prayer as an atonement.

438. Commentary:
➊ This narration is authentic in terms of its chain, and moreover, this incident has also been mentioned in other authentic narrations. However, in this narration, its narrator Khalid bin Samir made an error in the narration of the incident at three points:
(a) That the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) dispatched the army of commanders (jaysh al-umara).
(b) Whoever among you wishes to perform the Sunnah prayers, may do so.
(c) Along with it, make up (qada) for that prayer as well. That is, to consider this army as «جيش الامراء», to give an option regarding the Sunnah prayers of Fajr, and similarly, to command that the missed Fajr prayer be made up along with the Fajr prayer of the next day—none of these three points are correct. Apart from these errors, this narration is authentic. It is probably due to these errors that Shaykh al-Albani rahimahullah has declared it shaadh (anomalous). Therefore, a missed prayer should be performed as soon as one wakes up or remembers, as has been stated in authentic ahadith. It is not correct to delay it until the same prayer of the next day.
➋ By "jaysh al-umara" (the army of commanders), generally the Battle of Mu'tah is meant, whereas the author of Badhl al-Majhud, Mawlana Khalil Ahmad Saharanpuri, is of the opinion that the Battle of Khaybar could also be the "jaysh al-umara."
➌ To delay the prayer due to being occupied with any worldly matter is a great misfortune and a grave injustice to oneself, because on this occasion the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was afflicted with migraine, so first Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu), then Umar (radi Allahu anhu), and after them Ali (radi Allahu anhu) were given the flag. «والله أعلم»
