Narrated Abdullah ibn Masud: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: The first defect that permeated Banu Isra'il was that a man (of them) met another man and said: O so-and-so, fear Allah, and abandon what you are doing, for it is not lawful for you. He then met him the next day and that did not prevent him from eating with him, drinking with him and sitting with him. When they did so. Allah mingled their hearts with each other. He then recited the verse: "curses were pronounced on those among the children of Isra'il who rejected Faith, by the tongue of David and of Jesus the son of Mary". . . up to "wrongdoers". He then said: By no means, I swear by Allah, you must enjoin what is good and prohibit what is evil, prevent the wrongdoer, bend him into conformity with what is right, and restrict him to what is right.

Benefits and Issues:
This narration is weak in its chain of transmission, but the reality is that if one does not maintain enmity for the sake of Allah (lillah fi Allah) with the sinners, oppressors, and people of innovation, and does not cut off relations with them, but instead freely associates with them to the extent that even the sense of religious honor (ghayrah) is lost, then, in my opinion, the punishment for this should be extremely severe right here, as is evident from the history of Bani Isra'il and the current state of the Muslim Ummah.

(In the chain of narration, Abu Ubaydah did not hear from his father Abdullah ibn Mas'ud radi Allahu anhu.)

Explanation:
1:
“Those among the Children of Israel who disbelieved were cursed by the tongue of Dawud (David) and ‘Isa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary), alayhim as-salam. This was because they would disobey and transgress beyond bounds. Whatever evil a group among them committed, they would not prevent one another from it. Indeed, they used to do very evil deeds. You see many of them taking the disbelievers as allies; they have adopted a very evil way for themselves, as a result of which Allah is extremely angry with them, and they will abide forever in punishment in the Hereafter. And if these people had believed in Allah, and in this Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), and in what was sent down to him, they would not have taken the disbelievers as allies, but most of them are defiantly disobedient and wicked.” (Al-Ma’idah: 78)
