Narrated Fudalah: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught me and what he taught me is this: Observe the five prayers regularly. He said: I told (him): I have many works at these times; so give me a comprehensive advice which, if I follow, should be enough for me. He said: Observe the two afternoon prayers (al-asrayn). But the term al-asrayn (two afternoon prayers) was not used in our language. Hence I said: What is al-asrayn? He said: A prayer before the sunrise and a prayer before the sunset (i. e. the dawn and the afternoon prayers).

Brief Explanation
1؎ : The meaning of this hadith is not that for someone who is very busy, performing only two prayers a day will suffice; rather, the meaning is that at the very least, one should perform the prayers of these two times punctually at their earliest prescribed time (Bayhaqi, Iraqi).

428. Commentary: How can it be correct that it is sufficient for a working person to be regular only in the morning (Fajr) and afternoon (‘Asr) prayers? Shaykh Wali al-Din al-‘Iraqi has written that the answer to this objection is that, in reality, the statement of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) pertained to performing the prayers at their earliest times. So, the person excused himself by saying that he could not perform all five prayers at their earliest times. Then the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) especially emphasized the times of these two prayers. «والله أعلم بالصواب» The fact that Imam Abu Dawud rahimahullah mentioned this hadith in this chapter supports this interpretation.
