حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ عُثْمَانَ الْحِمْصِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي ، حَدَّثَنَا حَرِيزٌ ، عَنْ رَاشِدِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ حُمَيْدٍ السَّكُونِيِّ ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ مُعَاذَ بْنَ جَبَلٍ ، يَقُولُ : ارْتَقَبْنَا النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي صَلَاةِ الْعَتَمَةِ فَأَخَّرَ حَتَّى ظَنَّ الظَّانُّ أَنَّهُ لَيْسَ بِخَارِجٍ ، وَالْقَائِلُ مِنَّا ، يَقُولُ : صَلَّى ، فَإِنَّا لَكَذَلِكَ ، حَتَّى خَرَجَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالُوا لَهُ كَمَا قَالُوا ، فَقَالَ لَهُمْ : " أَعْتِمُوا بِهَذِهِ الصَّلَاةِ ، فَإِنَّكُمْ قَدْ فُضِّلْتُمْ بِهَا عَلَى سَائِرِ الْأُمَمِ ، وَلَمْ تُصَلِّهَا أُمَّةٌ قَبْلَكُمْ " .
Narrated Muadh ibn Jabal: We waited for the Prophet ﷺ to offer the night prayer. He delayed until people thought that he would not come out and some of us said that he had offered the prayer. At the moment when we were in this condition the Prophet ﷺ came out. People said to him as they were already saying. He said: Observe this prayer when it is dark, for by it you have been made superior to all the peoples, no people having observed it before you.

421. Commentary:
➊ The previous hadith regarding the leadership of Jibril (alayhis salam) in prayer has passed in Sunan Abu Dawood, Hadith number: 393, where it is mentioned: "This is the time of the Prophets before you," and in this hadith it is stated: "No nation before you has performed this prayer." The reconciliation between these two is that the times of prayer for the previous noble Prophets (alayhimus salam) used to have similar breadth, and there used to be a beginning and end to those times, or it may be that they did not perform the prayer with such delay as you did on that day. «والله أعلم»
➋ Indeed, it is more virtuous to perform the ‘Isha prayer late, but it is never permissible to abandon the congregational prayer in order to attain this virtue.
➌ The real aim and objective of the religion and Shari‘ah is nearness to Allah, the Exalted, and the attainment of reward. This quality is very prominent in the statements of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), and the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) also became eager for it. Therefore, those engaged in calling to Islam should highlight this aspect as much as possible in their invitation. «والله أعلم»
