Hadith 4161

Narrated Abu Umamah Ilyas ibn Thalabah: The Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mentioned this word before him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Listen, listen! Wearing old clothes is a part of faith, wearing old clothes is a part of faith. Abu Dawud said: He is Abu Umamah bin Thalabat al-Ansari

Benefits and Issues:

The mentioned narration has been declared weak in chain (isnad) by our esteemed researcher, whereas in the verification of Sunan Abi Dawud, it has been declared hasan. See: Sunan Abi Dawud (Urdu), Darussalam edition, Hadith: 4161.
In addition, Shaykh al-Albani has discussed this hadith in detail and declared it hasan.
Therefore, the opinion that the hadith is hasan appears to be correct, as our esteemed researcher has also declared it hasan in one place.
For further details, see: (al-Silsilah al-Sahihah of al-Albani, no. 341).

Avoidance of affectation (takallufat) is a part of faith; thus, a person of simple habits expresses gratitude to Allah even for ordinary blessings, whereas one accustomed to adornment and luxury sometimes considers even a great blessing to be beneath his standard and, instead of showing gratitude, begins to complain.

Many things are included in simplicity, for example:
Wearing patched clothes, sitting on the ground, not considering it beneath one’s dignity to listen to and, as much as possible, help the poor and needy, accepting a humble invitation from a poor person and expressing gratitude by eating the simple food he offers,
avoiding a contemptuous attitude towards servants, participating in the joys and sorrows of those of lower status than oneself, and so on.
